Founder of the race .
Petter came up with the idea of a race from Slussfors to the Arctic Circle and organizes the race for the second time this year.
He was part of the original crew and finished second in the first ACE. Now he's back helping to organize the second ACE and will also be guiding 3 guests on this years race.
April 2020, the pandemic just started and suddenly there were no more guests. But the dogs on the peak of their training. So Petter Karlsson decided to take his two handlers Luka Music and Matthias Schärer on an Expedition, leading them north torwards the Arctic Circle. They didn't made it quite that far and had to turn around about 30km shy of it, but as you can see in the picture, they enjoyed the 350km/4day expedition very much.
When Petter studied the maps during the Expedition he saw a great opportunity to make a race in this area, a real wilderness race for real mushers. Long distances between checkpoints, camping out in the nature and finding the trails yourself is what he had in mind. In 2021 there were still no guests on the tours and all big races cancelled, so with 4 weeks notice he decided to organize the Arctic Circle Sleddog Expedition 2021. On unmarked trails and just a GPS file to follow, 8 teams set out to see if it is even possible to do a wilderness race with distances of up to 160km between checkpoints. 3 days later 5 teams made it back to the finish and reported about a tough but very enjoyable experience.
One year later full tours and big races were back and there was no time to organize the Arctic Circle Expedition again. But on some Expedition tours, guests were very interested in this kind of adventure and asked about joining such a race as a guest. Petter Karlsson together with Matthias Schärer decided to organize another Edition of the Arctic Circle Expedition, this year with 3 guests with no previous racing experience being part of it. It will be a big challenge for everyone involved, but we are looking forward to it!
